John A. Harding, 78; Cowan teacher, coach

MUNCIE -- John A. Harding, 78, died Wednesday in Ball Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Harding was born in Kirklin and graduated from Kirklin High School and later North Carolina State University. He was a World War II Army veteran. He came to the Muncie area in 1954. He retired from teaching and coaching at Cowan High School in 1984 after 22 years. In 1963 he coached the only Cowan team ever to win the Delaware County Basketball championship. He also taught in the Morgan Township, Sharpsville and Tri-Central school systems.

He was a member of the Kirklin Masonic Lodge, Maplewood Golf Club, Kirklin Presbyterian Church, and the Muncie and Indiana Retired Teachers Associations.

Survivors include his wife of more than 52 years, Helen Harding; three sons, Bob Harding, Dave Harding (wife: Debbie) and Jim Harding (wife: Peggy); a sister, Barbara Harding, and five grandchildren.

A daughter and two brothers are deceased.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Meeks Mortuary.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Kirklin.

Calling will be 4-8 p.m. today and an hour before services Saturday at Meeks Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the athletic department of Cowan Community School Corp.
