Aviation pioneer. He is credited with the first airmail delivery from between New York City and Chicago on 7 September 1918 (the round trip flight took 9 hours, 18 minutes). He died from injuries sustained in a plane crash during an aviation tournament in Holdredge, NE. His feat was commemorated for many years on a wall mural at the Plainfield (IL) Post Office.
