Civil War Man Answers Call.
Francis X. Schluttenhofer Dies Here Thursday Evening.
Came to Resort Township Forty Years Ago. Funeral Saturday Morning from St. Francis. Church.
Francis X. Schluttenhofer, age 83, died at about 7 o'clock Thursday evening in this city following an illness of less than two weeks. Mr. Schluttenhofer was taken ill April 10 and brought to Petoskey hospital April 11. He appeared to improve in health until Wednesday, April 19, when he suddenly became worse.
Mr. Schluttenhofer came to Resort township about 40 years ago and located on a farm on the north arm of Walloon lake. He was born in Bavaria and came to America when a child, his people locating at St. Marys, Pa. He enlisted in the Union army at the opening of the Civil war and at the end of his enlistment, re-enlisted. Explosion of a shell during a Civil war battle rendered him practically deaf, and for 15 years he had been totally deaf.
The aged warrior enlisted in Company D, 74th Pennsylvania volunteers, and was discharged in June 1863, at Philadelphia. He re-enlisted April 13, 1864, and served until the close of the war. He married Mary Anna Hiemel, October 25, 1865. Mrs. Schluttenhofer died February 6, 1917, at the age of 76 years.
Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Peter Foltz, of Resort, and Mrs. Charles Skornia, of Horton's Bay, and two sons, Albert Schluttenhofer, of Charlevoix avenue, and Frank B. Schluttenhofer, of Resort township.
Mr. Schluttenhofer was a member of St. Francis church and a regular attendant at the various church services, when his health permitted.
The funeral will be held from St. Francis church at 9 o'clock Saturday with burial in St. Francis cemetery.
