Isaac Bourdage, 96, Dies Here Monday After Long Illness
Isaac Bourdage, 96, one of the last of the old-time lumbermen of the area, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday at Mercy General Hospital, where he had been a patient during the past nine years.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Alphonsus Church. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery here in the spring.
He was born in St. Charles de Caplan, in the Gaspe region of Québec, on Feb. 27, 1879, and had been a Tupper Lake resident since 1899. Mr. Bourdage worked for the Santa Clara Lumber Co. during its peak logging operations in the Tupper area, and thereafter was a successful logging contractor and jobber for many years. In the 1930's he was in the employ of the State Conservation Department, as foreman of tree planting crews, and on the development of campsites at Golden Beach, Raquette Lake and at Lake Eaton, near Long Lake.
Mr. Bourdage also served a couple of terms as highway superintendent for the Town of Altamont, and was employed by Paul Smith Electric on the construction of housing for the generators at its Piercefield falls hydro development prior to retiring in 1954.
His wife, the former Celina St. Louis, to who he was married on Dec. 27, 1902 at St, Alphonsus Church, died on March 4, 1966.
He is survived by one son, Réal Bourdage of this village; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
