Her daughter Ruth was given to the care of Albert's sister Caroline (Carrie) while Anna looked for work. Caroline refused to return Ruth to her mother. They never were able to have a mother, daughter relationship. This caused my mother great pain throughout her life. I'm sure it also was painful for my grandmother.
