He was the son of the late Luther and Cora Arthur Groves. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Groves, Thomas Groves and Luther Groves Jr.; and two sisters, Margaret Taylor and Genevie Spencer.

Dave was converted at the age of 25, and was thereafter a devoted member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Nettie.

David is survived by his wife, Lena Pittsenbarger Groves, to whom he was married 69 years. Additional survivors include three brothers, Raymond Groves of Craigsville, Herbert Groves and wife, Jackie, of Nettie and St. Albans and Kenneth Groves and wife, Joy, of Nettie; two sisters, Sylvia Amick of Leivasy and Imajean Price of Summersville; 21 nieces and nephews; as well as many beloved friends and neighbors.

Dave's life was devoted to his church at Mount Zion, where he served in many capacities over the years: a member of the choir, assistant Sunday school superintendent, a trustee, a member of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, member of the administrative board and a member of the Building Committee when the present Mount Zion structure was built in 1954. Dave was also the church's (Earl Charge's) delegate to annual conference, and served on the Conference and National Board of Evangelism. As Florida "snowbirds," Dave attended the Florida United Methodist Church of Hudson.
