Daniel Andrew Sawyer was the son of Daniel Andrew Sawyer, Sr. who was the son of Abel and Ollie Sawyer of Pasquotank County and Emma Stokely Sawyer who was the dt. of Isaac Stokely and Lydia McPherson Stokely of Pasquotank County, NC. He was m. 1 to Sophia Jennings on 28 Oct 1858 in Pasquotank County. He m. 2. Martha Banks on 25 April 1861 in Pasquotank County. His third wife was Christine Josephine Etheridge. After the war he returned to Pasquotank County where he farmed until his death in October of 1909.

Daniel A. Sawyer, a farmer in Pasquotank County, entered service at age 24 as a 2nd Lt. on May 16, 1861 in Pasquotank County and was mustered in at Camp Macon, Warren County, NC on September 21, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on October 25, 1862 and to Captain on July 8, 1863.
His name appears on a list of Prisoners of War taken by the forces of Gen'l A.E. Burnside on Roanoke Island February 15, 1862. He was released on parole at Elizabeth City, NC on February 21, 1862. He was eventually exchanged and returned to duty with Co. A on an unspecified date. Captain Sawyer was wounded August 19, 1864 in the right thigh in battle on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA and was hospitalized at General Hospital #4 at Richmond. In September,1864 he received a forty day furlough to his home in Hintonsville, Pasquotank County, NC. He returned to duty on an unspecified date. Captain Sawyer appears on a muster role (not dated) of officers and men surrendered by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA to William T. Sherman, Commander of the US Army in North Carolina on April 26, 1865. He was paroled at Greensboro, NC on May 1, 1865.
