US Congressman. A member of the National Republican Party (also known as the Anti-Jacksonian Party), he served in the US House of Representatives from Kentucky's 10th congressional district from March 1815 until March 1817 and again from March 1819 until March 1823. After serving in the Kentucky State Senate from 1828 until 1832, he returned to the US House of Representatives as a representative from Kentucky's 7th congressional district for two terms from March 1833 until March 1837. After his final term had expired, he returned to Kentucky and served as its Secretary of State from 1844 until 1848. He died at the age of 68. He was the father-in-law of John L. Helm, who served as the 18th and 24th Governor of Kentucky.
