MICHEL, Dr. William 'Bill' Orison

Born March 8, 1920 to William Peter Michel and Ruth Winifred Browder in Canton, Ohio and died April 3, 2012 in Petaluma, CA. He is survived by Susan Jane Michel, loving wife of 68 years, brother Emory Michel of St Mary's, Ohio, daughter and son-in-law Pamela Sue and James Campe of Inverness, California, and son William Charles Michel and daughter-in-law Deborah Daubner of Englewood, Florida. He is greatly missed by his family including his grandchildren, Zeth Michel Campe, Bowling Green, Ohio, Dr. Carson Blake Campe, Boston, Noah Emerson Michel, Los Angeles, and Naomi Sadie Jessie Michel, Auburn, Washington and great-grandchildren.

William graduated from Creston High School in rural Ohio and received a BS in Pharmacy from Butler College. As a lieutenant in the Coast Guard, Bill met Jane at the USO in Columbus, Ohio. They married Nov. 21, 1943. Upon returning home after serving in the Coast Guard during WW II, Bill followed his dream of becoming a medical doctor by graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1951. After a few years of private practice in Hillsdale, Michigan, he returned to University of Michigan for post graduate training in Pediatrics. Moving to California in 1958 for sunnier weather, the family eventually landed in Sacramento. Dr. Bill gave himself to the care of babies and children in South Sacramento through his private practice of 25 years and on staff at Mercy, Sutter, and Methodist hospitals.

Bill was a member of Sacramento El Dorado Medical Society, Phi Rho Sigma Medical fraternity, American Academy of Pediatrics and past-President of Sacramento Pediatrics Society, and served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UC Davis College of Medicine. He was a man of kindness, thoroughly enjoying the ongoing study and practice of pediatrics to better serve the young. When he retired from his medical practice, his home overflowed with people coming to thank him personally for what he had done for them. At 65 years old, free of the responsibilities of work, Bill began a new life with his adventurous wife, driving to the 48 states in their VW Vanagon, stopping off at relatives and keeping an eye out for square dances. They continued traveling for the next 15 years to Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and then Africa, photographing and collecting wonderful memories along their way. Bill enjoyed his many wonderful friends through playing golf, riding his bike, playing a hand of Bridge, swimming a mile in the Elk's pool on a weekly basis, and dancing with his wife and partner of many years, sometimes all in one day. As he aged, the MS that he carried began to affect his balance, although his neurologist was always in awe of his overall good health.

Bill was preceded in death by his son Theodore Allen Michel, his younger sister Grace Wilcox and his older sister Winifred Thomas. The family is very grateful to the loving kindness that William Orison received while living at Adobe House of Petaluma, CA and equally thankful to the wonderful and attentive compassion he received while in the care of Hospice of Petaluma. As a remembrance, gifts can be made in his name to Sacramento Children's Home, 2750 Sutterville Rd., Sacramento, CA 95820 or Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran St., Petaluma, CA, 94952. You are invited to a celebration of his life at the Centennial United Methodist Church, 5401 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA on June 15, 2012 at noon with a gathering in the social room following the memorial service.
