Snowden S. Kirkland is the son of Rebecca Kirkland and Willis Kirkland. He married Rutha Kirkland on December 31, 1856, in Henry County, Alabama. S. S. Kirkland owned 3 slaves in 1860: 1 male age 25, and 2 females age 12, living in 1 slave house. In the same census, his mother Rebecca is listed with 4 slaves, also living in 1 slave house: 1 female age 40, and 3 males, ages 25, 8 and 6. Henry A. Kirkland owned 1 male age 2.

Snowden S. Kirkland was enlisted on August 19, 1861, in Virginia, by Capt. A. C. Gordon for 12 months. He was wounded in May 1863 in the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, with a gunshot wound to the flesh of his right thigh. He was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on July 6, and admitted on August 8, 1863, as a prisoner of war, to Camp Letterman U.S.A. General Hospital, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Pvt. Kirkland was sick in Alabama Hospital at Richmond, Virginia to August 31, 1863. He was sent to another hospital on September 16, 1863, in Baltimore, Maryland. He returned to duty on September 25, 1863. Three days later, on September 28, 1863, he was admitted to Alabama Hospital No. 1. He was furloughed for 40 days on October 1, 1863. Pvt. Snowden S. Kirkland was present on Company B muster roll dated April 1, 1864, but listed absent on a muster roll to June 30, 1864, "detailed at Hospital, Richmond, Virginia," where he was employed as a nurse. He received a diagnosis of permanent disabiity in May 1864 due to a volley ball lodged "against upper 3d femur." He was assigned to the General Hospital at Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia, and reported for duty on June 4, 1864, as a nurse or "ward master." He remained there through at least January 11, 1865, working while a prisoner of war.
