Henry Co, MO - Joseph "Joe" Brownsberger II, the son of Joseph and Cathern Albert Brownsberger, was born on February 8, 1865 in Toledo, OH, and died on July 13, 1941, at the age of 76 from heart/pneumonia complications. His son, Andrew Sr., was with him when he expired in the Butler Memorial Hospital in Bates Co., MO. Joe's father emigrated to America in 1849 from Bavaria, Germany, and he married Cathern Albert in Toledo, Ohio. Joe II was the fourth child born to this union. After the family moved to Walker Township, Henry County, Missouri in 1869, and settled in a log cabin on a farm NW of Germantown, three more children were born. In about 1892, Joe II married Mary Ellen Durkin, the adopted daughter of John Ward and Hannah Casburn of St. Clair County. He had to court Mary Ellen by buggy or carriage from his farm over 14 miles away. They made their first home in a one-room log cabin on Joe's farm (SW of his father's homestead). To this union, eleven children were born: Henry A., Lenora T., Andrew J., Augusta, Leo L., Esther M., Cornelius P., Edward J., Catherine M., Maurice, and Mark Estel Brownsberger. A lifetime farmer, Joe owned several different pieces of land in both Henry and Bates County. He had a large family to feed and received plenty of farming help from all his sons. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Katherine Brownsberger Lennartz, Mary (Sister Corona) Brownsberger, Rosalia Catherine Brownsberger; two brothers, Henry and John Henry Brownsberger. Survivors include his wife; one sister, Bertha E. Brownsberger Walz; all eleven children; and several grandchildren. He was a member of St. Ludger's Catholic Church in Germantown. After a funeral mass, burial was in St. Marys Cemetery, Montrose, Deepwater Twp, Henry Co., MO. - (info from Marty Lawton)
