Two Rivers Woman is Mother of Year
Wed. March 13, 1968
Green Bay Press-Gazette
Oshkosh (AP) - The only woman ever named chairman of the executive council of the United Church of Christ, Mrs. George Kahlenberg of Two Rivers, was named Wisconsin's "Mother of the Year" Tuesday.
Mrs. Kahlenberg, mother of three grown daughters, was called "a rare mother who emphasized the spiritual and social virtues as well as the more practical" by Mrs. Bess M. Spees of Oshkosh, chairman of the state selection committee.
Mrs. Kahlenberg, a native of Rochester, Minn., who graduated from Northwestern, net her husband when she took her first teaching job at Two Rivers. She has, the committee said, headed at one time or another, all of the 12 community organizations to which she has belonged, and held many state service positions as well.
She was co-moderator of the first General Synod meeting of the United Church of Christ in 1961 and has traveled for her church into mission fields and national and International councils.
Mrs. Kahlenberg will be honored by her two sponsoring organizations, the Two Rivers Women's Club and the Fellowship of Grace Congregational Church, and during Mother's Day week will join the 49 other state winners in New York, where the American Mothers Committee will select a national Mother of the Year.
