William Artz Stutzman was the son of Peter Stutzman and Elizabeth Artz. He grew up on the home farm in Hegins Township and received his education in the local school. In 1850 he built the "Fountain Hotel" at Fountain and conducted it for 25 years. He was active in public affairs, holding the offices of the poor director of Schuylkill County, township treasurer; tax collector and supervisor, and he was one of the leading members of the Democratic party. He served as post master for the Fountain Post Office. His religious connection was with the Reformed Church and he was instrumental in organizing and building Christ Church in Fountain where he is buried. At one time, the church was called "Stutzman's Church". He was first married to Catherine "Katrina" Zerbe. Together they had 6 children; Isaac Zacharias, Mary Anna (drowned at age 14), Frederick E., Andrew Jackson, and Henry A. (murdered in Nebraska). He married his second wife, Helena Rebuck, and together they had three daughters, Carrie Sylvania, Celia Assissie (who married Philip Monroe Artz) and Emma Louisa (who married Richard A. Bressler).
