Alexander Devers Jr., aged 17, became a Confederate Guerrilla at the end of the Civil War, in early 1865. He joined his brothers, James and Art, who were part of Ol Shepherd's small band of guerrillas that were known as the "Terrors of Clinton County". They refused to surrender to Union authorities. On March 30, 1865, the guerrillas were chased on horseback by Union militia from Clinton County to the farm of Minerva Fox in northern Clay County, just a few miles south of the Clinton border. Alexander and Art Devers were killed on Mrs. Fox's property. Another brother, James Devers, and the rest of the guerrillas escaped. Art and Alexander were buried in an unmarked, common grave on Mrs. Fox's property, by their mother.
