Son of Winefred Armstrong and Benjamin Kirkland. Martin V. Kirkland was enlisted on May 11, 1861 at Abbeville, Alabama by Capt. Alexander C. Gordon for 12 months, and he mustered in on May 16 at Montgomery, Alabama. He died in a hospital on July 6, 1862, from wounds received from the Battle of Seven Pines. His mother, Wineford Kirkland, filed for settlement on September 15, 1862, stating that her son died without widow, child, or father. Her address was Abbeville, Henry County, Alabama.
