Benjamin Bowen, miner, killed by fall of roof coal in Eckhart Slope.
Benjamin Bowen, who lost his life in the Eckhart Slope, was warned half an hour before he was killed, that the roof in his working place was unsafe, and required to be supported by props. He neglected the order of the overseer, hence was killed by the roof falling upon him.

Horrible Fatal Accident
Saturday afternoon about 1 o'clock Benjamin Bowen a miner, aged about 30 years, with a wife and three children was instantly killed by a fall of rock in the Eckhart slope. He and his brother, Samuel were working together when the accident happened. Samuel was terribly shocked by the accident to his brother, but recovered and tore away the debris above the dead man at the imminent peril of his own life. The unfortunate man is said to have been more frightfully mutilated than any one ever known to have been hurt in the mine—his heart being crushed entirely and was placed on his breast by his brother as he was being taken out of the mine. His body was taken to his home in Frostburg, where an inquest was held on Saturday night, but we have not learned the result. (Courtesy of Pat Dailey per Shawn McGreevy)
