in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was born in England and was the son of John and Margaret Tidd, and died about 1641.
John Southwick's second marriage was another widow Hannah Flint 12 May 1658 and a third Sarah Burnett daughter of John Burnett (Or Burnell). The Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers as they were known, broke with Puritan beliefs of the area and formed their own congregations. They believed it was possible to have a direct experience with Christ without clergy. The differences angered Puritans and forced them to enact laws against Quakers which spawned widespread persecution.
During the infamous Quaker Persecution in which his mother and father were banished, John took into his house members of that sect when they came into the area, and was fined twenty shillings a week while they remained in town. In 1658, John was fined for being a Quaker, but despite this he was appointed to various duties, among the Surveyors
of Fences and Surveyor of Highways.
