Helen was born on the family farm in Pickering, MO in 1931 to Lester and Claire Hollensbe. She received her nursing degree in 1952 in St. Joseph, MO. After graduation, she married David Thomas in 1953. They soon relocated to Colorado where she became a nursing supervisor at Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1990 after 30 years of service.
Helen was widowed very young and was left to raise three young children on her own. She was the foundation on which her children built their families. Anyone who knew her adored her playful and loving attitude towards life. Her home was always filled with the smell of wonderful cooking, sounds of the Colorado Avalanche on the TV and half finished puzzles sprawled out on the table. She thoroughly enjoyed her rose garden, reading, doing needlework and hosting the most wonderful Sunday family dinners. Her strength and compassion will be missed by those who loved her most. Aside from her three children her greatest joy was being Grandma.
She is survived by her son, David (Vicki) Thomas; her daughters, Marcia (Ted) Harris and Beth Raymond; grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Drake, Jeff (Andrea) Thomas, Steven Harris, Joey Thomas, Chris (Sara) Harris and Caiti Raymond; great-grandchildren, Emilie and Abagail Drake and baby girl Thomas due this July.
She is also survived by her older sister, Florence and Aunt Bernice, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, sisters, Hazel and Doris and son-in-law, Alan. Her family will be hosting an open house this Friday at her home at 3:00 p.m.
For details, please call Dove-Witt Family Mortuary. Her family will take Helen home to Missouri at a later date."
