Green moved to Burlington in 1860 to run a grocery store. The family lived on the corner of Cherry Street and Winooski Avenue. After selling the grocery store in 1866, he was elected Burlington city assessor. He held that position until resigning in 1872, but was re-elected in 1879. Green served as
- cemetery commissioner from 1867 to 1869
- overseer of the poor 1872 -1873
- Burlington City treasurer 1873 to 1893.
