JANE HAHN, 87
Jane Hahn died in Chico on Thursday, May 31, 2012. The second of nine children, she was born in Willows to John Harold and Amelia McMartin on Jan. 29, 1925.
She attended Willows schools and graduated in 1942 from Willows High School. Later that year, at the age of 17, she was hired by the Glenn County Welfare Department.
In 1944, she met a young airman from Nebraska named Richard J. Hahn, who was stationed at the Chico Airfield. They were married June 3, 1945.
After a few years of working in the Welfare Department, she was hired as assistant probation officer under Heloise Knock and in 1964, upon Mrs. Knock's retirement, became Chief Probation Officer until her retirement in 1995. "Affectionately known as "Old Lady Hahn," she made a difference in the lives of many young people who later came back to thank her for her contributions to their lives.
Her dedication to the youth of the community didn't stop at 5 o'clock. She spent numerous late nights and early mornings helping those in need.
She worked for many years trying to convince the board of supervisors to build a facility in Glenn County dedicated to improving the housed youths' lives with care and education. In 1993, her hard work was rewarded with the resolution of the Glenn County Board of Supervisors for her long and exemplary service to the County of Glenn, the new Juvenile Detention Facility would be named after her, "The Jane Hahn Juvenile Hall".
In January of 1995, her dedication to Glenn County was again recognized, this time with the "Woman of Distinction" award from Soroptimist International.
Jane McMartin Hahn is survived by her son, Jack McDade and his wife, Denise, of Colusa; daughter Jennifer Wilhelm of Colfax; grandsons Zachary Frank, Jack McDade and Christopher Bruce; granddaughters Tara Gorman, Amy Flint Newton, Laura Flint James, and Jamie Lyndsay; and seven great-grandchildren; brothers Thomas (and his wife Rosemary) McMartin of Willows, James McMartin of Carson City, Nev., and John McMartin of Santa Rosa; sisters Mary Ann Ainger (and her husband Ira) of Grass Valley, and Barbara Anderson (and her husband, LaVern) of Orland. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard (Dick), and her brothers Donald, Harold and George.
Her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will miss the cards and personal notes that accompanied them each and every birthday, graduation or holiday.
Services are planned for 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, at the First United Methodist Church located at 544 N. Shasta, Willows. Interment is to follow in the Willows Veterans Cemetery.
She was, until her death, the second longest living member of the First United Methodist Church of Willows, and the family would ask that any donations be made in her memory to the church. Arrangements are under the direction of F.D. Sweet and Son Mortuary of Willows. – Transcribed by M.
