Auman was a nineteen year old shoemaker from Schuylkill Haven when he enlisted on 10 September 1862 in Company K, 127th PA Infantry. He was mustered into federal service on 14 September '62 and served with this unit until he was mustered out on 20 May 1863. On 12 February 1864 he enlisted in Company E of the 48th PA Infantry and served for the duration of the war. Captured 12 June 1864 and held for a time at Andersonville Prison in South Carolina. He was mustered out with the regiment on 19 July 1865.
