NEWPORT NEWS - Jerome W. "Jerry" Hogge Jr., 59, died on Saturday, April 8, 1995. He was a lifelong resident of Newport News.
He was a member of Orcutt Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also served on the Orcutt Baptist School Board. He was president and chief executive officer of Newport News Savings and Loan Association, and president of Newport News Service Corporation. He served on the Board of Peninsula Chapter National Conference of Christians and Jews and was a member and past president of the Newport News Rotary Club. He was vice mayor and served two terms on the Newport News City Council, and was a board member of Youth Focus. He was director of Data Systems Corporation and a board member and chairman of Governors of Virginia Savings and Loan League. He was a board member and former chairman of Virginia League Services, past president of Hampton Roads Jaycees, past commissioner of Peninsula Transportation District Commission and past member of local Governors Advisory Council.
He was a retired commander of the U.S. Coast Guard and was commanding officer of the Coast Guard Reserve Unit, Yorktown. He was chairman of Peninsula United Way Campaign, board member of Big Brothers, board member of Virginia International Terminals, board member of Virginia Peninsula Economic Development Council, board member of Board of Visitors of Christopher Newport College and board member of Mary Immaculate Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Anne Nicholls Hogge; daughter, Jacquelyn Pointer Hogge, M.D., of Washington, D.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jerome W. "Jerry" Hogge III, and Andrea Wellman Hogge of Fairfax; two sisters, Gaye Hogge Topping and brother-in-law, Larry M. Topping of Poquoson, and Bonnie B. Mizelle and brother-in-law, Ralph Mizelle of Virginia Beach; grandson, Nicholas Alexander "Alex" Hogge of Fairfax; beloved mother-in-law, Virginia Pointer Nicholls of Newport News; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Orcutt Baptist Church by James Doyle. Burial in Peninsula Memorial Park. Family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Riverside Funeral Home.
