John E. Aicher (originally: Johann Evangelist Aicher) was born on April 20, 1843 in the village of Mahlstetten in the former Kingdom of Württemberg. He immigrated to America aboard the ship "Zeeland," landing at the port of Philadelphia on May 23, 1879, and became a citizen of the United States on June 11, 1884. He, his wife, and their four children lived on a small acreage just north of Iowa City, Iowa. He died of pneumonia on January 20, 1899, just four days before his wife.
