Alene Beth Palmer, loving mother and grandmother, became our Guardian Angel on January 16, 2006 surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.

Alene was born in the Wynooche Valley near Montesano, WA on July 20, 1916 to John and Clara (Oien) Fry, early pioneers of the area. One of five children raised on a farm during the depression, it was here on the Wynooche that Alene developed her firm belief that a person's real wealth consisted of family and loved ones rather than worldly goods.

Married for 63 years to her one and only sweetheart, Roy Palmer, Alene personified the words love and devotion. Throughout their lifetime together, Alene was a loyal and faithful companion to Roy and together the couple enjoyed countless adventures. An avid outdoorswoman, Alene loved to hike, hunt, fish and rock hound with Roy throughout the western states. Quietly proud of the fact that in all of the 63 years of their marriage she and Roy had never had a fight, Alene kept her pledge to him that they would never be separated in life by tenderly and graciously caring for him until the time of his passing four years ago. As true love remains eternal, Roy's last act on earth was to kiss his sweetheart goodbye and tell her how very beautiful she was. Alene treasured this moment, and had stated that it gave her strength and comfort over the past year.

In the memories of her loved ones, Alene will be remembered with smiles for her renowned Angel Food cakes, date filled cookies, marathon episodes of playing hide and seek and her rousing version of "The Bear Went Over the Mountain". These moments, along with the famous "Fry Snort" – a Norwegian trait that revealed itself in times of great humor and silliness, help ease the ache and emptiness of losing someone so special and dear. Alene was our rock, our heroine, and the person we all aspired to be.

Alene will be eternally loved by her children James and Pat, Carol and Bill; grandchildren Jim, Lisa, Mark and Lynelle; great-grandchildren Donald, Nathan-Roy, Joel, Cody, Melanie, Emily, and her cat, Waylon.

Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Yasuko and Missy from Multicare Hospice for the care and dignity they provided Alene. In honor of Alene's one request, the family would like to extend their sincere appreciation, love, respect and gratitude to Alene's children for caring for her so lovingly and allowing her to remain in the security of her home until the end.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 23, 2006 at the Wynooche Cemetery with a fellowship to follow at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Montesano. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Alene's name to Multicare Hospice PO Box 5200, Tacoma, WA 98415.
