Death Notice
MITTLEMAN, JONAS, 88, year old passed away January 19, 2005. Preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, married for 56 years. Born April 22, 1916 to Meyer and Frankie Mittleman in Brooklyn, New York. In his early years, Jonas' life's ambition was to be an opera star. He studied with some of the finest Italian and German maestroes having an unusually mature voice for his age. He sang opera on numerous radio programs as a very young man and had many offers to study in Europe. But the Economic Depression came and thoughts and dreams of studying in Europe faded. Jonas joined his fathers [sic] paper and bag business, M. Mittleman and Son, where he helped create a very successful company, serving retail stores throughout the entire state of New York. World War II came and Jonas served in the U. S. Army, Tenth Mountain Division with Bob Dole in the European Theater of Operations. He loved to tell his "war stories" to friends and family. After the war, Jonas returned home and back to the family business. Having enough of the cold winters, he headed south. Jonas, Charlotte and their two children, headed to Miami, June of 1956 where he opened his state franchised restaurant, "Jahn's" of the Miracle Mile. He was known as "The Man of the Miracle." Jahn's was the "South Beach" of those days. Everyone young and old would stop at his famous restaurant and ice cream parlour after "the Show" or a University of Miami game and attempt those enormous ice cream "kitchen sinks." Jonas loved his customers and the patrons loved him. Health reasons forced Jonas to retire in 1974. He and Charlotte moved to Aventura where they spent much of their time caring for their parents.
Survived by his daughter Linda (Dr. Stuart) Leeds and Dr. Roger (Holly) Mittleman, and his grandchildren: Melissa, Jonathan, Daniel, and Carly and brother Jack (Gladys) Mittleman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the National Parkinson's Foundation. Graveside services at Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Friday 1/21/2005, 11:45 a. m. WEISS MEMORIAL CHAPEL 1-800-858-7118.
