George was the son of Charles R. and Mary Tunkey Smith and was likely born in the Waterford area of Erie county, PA. He was the oldest of seven children, followed by Ella Maria b. 1857, Wilber Earnest b. 1859, De Forest b. 1861, Ethelbert b. 1863, Addie Lesta b. 1865, and Grace M. b. 1874.

By the 1880 census, he had arrived in Hamilton county, IA. where he appears to have been working as a farmhand in Fremont township. On December 10, 1882 he married Carrie M. Doolittle. They began farming SE of webster City, later purchasing 160 acres in section 15 of Cass township.

They raised four children: Charlie Aden b. 9/12/1883, Carrie May b. 12/20/1886, Hattie Grace, b. 7/17/1888, and Lesta b. 1/8/1892.

After 1908 their son Charlie took over the farm operation. George and Carrie moved to Webster City. George developed a growing business installing and repairing windmills for livestock watering. They resided at 615 Bank street.
