He was appointed Secratary of the Territory by President Monroe at the age of 22. He then served as interim Governor of Arkansas Territory 1828-1829. He was also the Co-founder of what is today the Rose Law firm. Robert Mortally wounded Henry Wharton Conway in a duel and Crittenden County is named for him. He served in the war of 1812 and was a leader in the Whig Party.

His brother was the Governor and a Senator from Kentucky; John Jordan Crittenden.

His wife was Ann Innes Morris 1805-1888 and is buried in the Frankfort Cemetery, Section M, Lot 50, Grave 9, Frankfort, Franklin, Kentucky. Their children were Elisabeth, Margaret, John, Morris, Robert and Ann. His wife married John Todd Edgar after Robert's death.
