Michigan Governor. The son of Congressman Ferdinand Brucker, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1916, enlisted in the National Guard's 33rd Infantry Regiment, and served in the Pancho Villa Expedition. He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and served with the 166th Infantry Regiment, 42nd (Rainbow) Infantry Division during World War I, receiving the Silver Star. After the war he remained in the Reserve, serving until 1937. In 1919 he was admitted to the bar. A Republican, he was Assistant prosecuting attorney of Saginaw County from 1919 to 1923 and Prosecuting Attorney from 1923 to 1927. From 1927 to 1928 he was a state Assistant Attorney General, and he was Attorney General from 1928 to 1930. He served as Governor from 1930 to 1932, and was an unsuccessful US Senate candidate in 1936. Brucker served as the Department of Defense's Counsel during the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954 and 1955. In July, 1955 he was appointed Secretary of the Army, and he served until January, 1961. He was the recipient of several honorary degrees, and a member of several veterans organizations, fraternal organizations and civic clubs.
