William Walter Rainey was born the 16th of December 1877 in North Litchfield Township, Illinois. After finishing his schooling he went to the Western Stock Ranges and later brought back to Illinois several carloads of western range horses.

On the 4th of April 1901 he married Ethel Parton Shaver, daughter of Henry C. and Frances (Hodges) Shaver, of Des Moines, Iowa. She was born the 18th of November 1881 and died on the 17th of October 1952.

Her grandfather Hodges was one of the early pioneer Methodist Episcopal missionaries in Iowa, traveling all over the northern part of the state on horseback. Her great uncle was James Parton, historian and biographer.

The young couple began life on a farm. On the 1st of April 1905 William entered the Post Office in Litchfield, Illinois from which position he retired in 1945 and moved to Sebastopol, California. Mr. and Mrs. Rainey had a total of five children:
1. Dorothy Genevive Rainey (1904 to 1987)
2. Donald Victor Rainey (1910 to 1994)
3. Truman Woodworth Rainey (1912 to 1924)
4. Robert Howard Rainey (1916 to 2005)
5. William Philip Rainey (1922)

After his first wife passed away, William married a second time to Elfreda Partch on the 1st of March 1955. He passed away on the 20th of September 1959 in Sebastopol, California.
