Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Senator. A lawyer pre-Civil War, he was commissioned as a Captain of Volunteers on October 24, 1862, and was assigned as an Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Brigadier General John M. Thayer. He later was assigned to the staff of Major General Grenville M. Dodge, serving first as an Assistant Adjutant General, then as General Dodge's Chief of Staff. While serving in the Union Army of the Tennessee, he helped recruit Unionists from Alabama to the army, and was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 1st Alabama (Union) Volunteer Cavalry on September 11, 1863. He led the regiment through the campaigns under Major General William Tecumseh Sherman that resulted in the capture of Atlanta, Georgia, the famous "March to the Sea", and the operations through South and North Carolina. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the campaign through Georgia and the Carolinas". he was honorably mustered out on July 22, 1865. Soon after the end of the war he set up a law practice in Decatur, Alabama, and when that state was re-admitted to the Union in 1868 he was elected as a Republican to represent it in the United States Senate. He served from 1868 until 1879. His later years were spend ranching in Nevada, and he passed away in Washington, DC in 1893.
