FATHER BARTHOLOMEW SMITH
MOTHER CATHERINE EVERHART SMITH
WIFE REBECCA BOSLEY SMITH
MARRIED MARCH 12 1829

SMITH: Henry Smith, the author of a well-known book[1] about the experience of a Methodist circuit rider, was an appointed preacher for Winchester (1803-05, 1819-20) and Loudoun (1826-28). Born Apr. 23, 1769, near Frederick, Md., he was admitted to The MEC on trial in 1794; and, in Baltimore MEC, he was ordained a Deacon in full connection in 1796 and ordained an Elder there in 1798. He preached under MEC appointment 41 years (1794-1835), superannuated (no longer itinerating) in 1835, and died Dec. 8, 1862 in Hookstown, Md. (age 94). His other appointments were Clarksburg in The MEC (1794-96); Limestone, Salt River, Green, Miami, Scioto, and Scioto-Miami in Baltimore MEC (1796-1802); Limestone in Western MEC (1802-03); and, in Baltimore MEC (1803-35), Calvert, Baltimore Circuit, Fells Point Circuit, Fells Point, Alleghany, Annapolis, Fredericksburg, Calvert, Great Falls, Fells Point, PE of Northumberland Dist, Berkeley, York, Hagerstown, and Baltimore Circuit. He is buried with his wife, Rebecca Bosley Smith (1776-1867), whom he married Mar. 12, 1829, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Baltimore.
The inscription on his tomb reads: Rev. Henry Smith born near Frederick City, Maryland, April 23, 1769, died Dec. 8, 1862. A man remarkable for purity of life, a minister of Christ distinguished for extraordinary sacrifice and usefulness whom all delighted to honor. He was a member of the M. E. Church 73 years, connected with its itinerant ministry a remarkable 69 years. He rests from his labors and his works do follow him.
Henry Smith … the chief attraction of “Pilgrim’s Rest,” at Hookstown, near Baltimore, is gone. The venerable patriarch, Rev. Henry Smith, who pitched his tent there upward of 20 years, has crossed over Jordan and is safe at home. Those who have been accustomed to think of him in connection with that hallowed spot will now turn away from it with regret, and henceforth must look for him as one who is forever at rest on the further shore. Beautiful as was the life of this holy and useful minister of Christ, the manner of his death was not less so. As he drew near his end, and no longer able to speak, he made signs to those who sat watching by him of a desire to be placed in his usual attitude of prayer. After remaining on his knees about two minutes, he was gently laid upon his bed again, where he lingered for a short time and then expired, in the 94th year of his age and the 69th of his ministry: thus ending his Christian pilgrimage as he commenced it, with prayer. [Conf Memoir, 1863]
