Viola grew up in Sumner, Pierce Co., WA with her two sisters (Catherine and Suzanne). Her father was J.J. Canon who left his three daughters with their grandparents in Sumner, Pierce County, Washington. He eventually moved to California and died in San Diego on June 2, 1940. Her obituary was printed in the Tacoma News Tribune for Monday, February 18, 1935 on page 12:
