Chico Enterprise-Record, Friday, March 3, 1972: "V. E. Hiatt. Vernon Elliott Hiatt, aged 78, Rt. 1, Box 775, Durham, died Thursday in a local hospital.

"Born March 19, 1893, in Traver, Tulare County, he lived 61 years in Butte County and worked in agriculture most of his adult life. He was employed at the Armstrong and Smith Ranch of Durham for 20 years.

"Surviving are his widow, Ethel M. of the home; a son, Richard Vernon Hiatt of Chico; a stepson, John William Hamby of Paradise; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Betty Marie Knuthson of Juneau, Alaska; a brother, Sherman L. of Durham; a sister, Mrs. Cara [sic, Cora] may Coon of Durham; and two grandchildren.

"Funeral services are set at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chico Funeral Home with officiation by the Rev. R. J. Pennington of Sierra Chapel. Entombment will be in Chico Mausoleum.

"Wava Backlund will sing 'The Old Rugged Cross' and 'What a Fried I have in Jesus' at the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Vern Knuthson, Dewayne Taylor, Carl Cole, John and John Roy Hamby and Gary Stazenski."
