Walter Jeff Mathis was born on July 19, 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone, where his mother and father lived concurrent with his dad serving as member in our nation's military service. Jeff passed from this life as we know it on May 7, 2012. He was 62 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents; Daniel H. Mathis and Bernadine W. Gillespie. Also his grand parents, Walter E. and Alice H. Mathis and Thomas J. and Rose D. Walker all of Arkansas.

He is survived by his four younger brothers: Donald E. Mathis of San Antonio, Benny D. Mathis of Austin, Ted W. Mathis (Pattie) Live Oak, and Matthew T. Mathis of Portland, OR. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; Adam, Nicole Rose, Charlie, Maggie Rose, Chloe and by other dear relatives and friends.

As an army brat he lived in Panama, Arkansas (3 different times), Texas (4 different times) and in Maryland. He himself later served in the US army from 1969 to 1973 and was assigned in Germany. After serving in the army, he enrolled at the University of Texas where he received a bachelor's degree. Long before the personal computer became the norm, Jeff understood computers. Early on his career he worked for NASA contractors at the Space Center in Houston. Later he moved to San Antonio and for many years owned his own business specializing in computer sales and service to other small businesses and individuals. Ever since he was at UT, Austin held a special place in his heart and so he moved back there about a dozen years ago.
