United States Army Major General. Born in New York City, New York he enlisted as a Private in the 71st Infantry, US Army, National Guard in 1900 and was the only person in the Regiment's history to rise from a Private to a Major General. During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 79th Division, France, became Assistant Chief of Staff, then to the 77th Division as Chief of Staff and was promoted to Colonel. After the war, he was promoted Brigadier General commander of the 87th Infantry Brigade and later retired as a US Army Major General. In 1952, he launched his Campaign to establish Knights Templar Hospitals, which became the Knights Templar Eye Foundation that he founded in 1955 and was president until his death at age 93.
