James served as a Technical Sergeant on B-24D "Liberty Lass" #41-23732, 409th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 16, 1941, prior to the war, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was shot down and crashed near Plouarzel, north west of Brittany, France during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
