Warehouse Superintendent Killed by Heart Disease - Was Civil War Veteran
Attacked by heart disease while reading in the library of his home, 4908 Cedar avenue, late Saturday evening, Louis G. Martin superintendent of warehouses in this city, and for several years a special collector of customs at this port, died before his family could summon medical assistance.
Mr. Martin was 67 years old and was a Civil War veteran, having entered the Union army when he was 16 years old.
He served in the army for three years, taking part in many of the big battles with the Confederate forces. For many years he was Chief of the Appointment Division at Washington and later held the office of supervising special agent of the Treasury Department at the Capital. He held this post for seven years, resigning it to come to this city, where he accepted the position of special deputy collector of customs.
A few years ago he made superintendent of warehouses and held this office at the time of his death. Early in January he was attacked by heart disease, but recovered in a short time. He is survived by a widow and one daughter, Mrs. Charles F. Schmidt. His funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Dr. J. Beverly Lee, pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Fiftieth street and Baltimore avenue, will officiate at the services and interment will be in West Laurel Hill Cemetery."
