Born on the banks of the Clyde River in Scotland, Andrew Douglas MacCorkindale was the eldest son of sea Captain A. MacCorkindale. After an apprenticeship and later study in London in field of shipbuilding and locomotive engineering, Andrew immigrated to the United States in 1907. Working first for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and then the Pennsylvania Railroad, he completed the Pennsylvania Railroad Educational Course in Electrical Engineering. On both his WW I Draft Registration Card and the 1930 census, his occupation was listed as “ship builder.” He became a naturalized U.S. citizen prior to 1917. His 1910 marriage to Martha Reed Dahlgren Wilson was blessed with three children: Andrew Dahlgren MacCorkindale (1912-2001), Douglas A. MacCorkindale (1914-1969), and Catherine MacCorkindale (b.1921 d. unknown).
