According to Dice's obituary,on Sunday morning,April 28,1867,of apoplexy, near Laurel. William Dice ,aged 21 years, was the son of Mr. Gotllieb Dice. The deceased was distinguished by his fine social disposition, and by his good, moral and industrious habits; and He deserves to be remembered for the hard service he rendered his country in the late civil war,was a private in Co. K,123rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He was one of 38 privates belonging to said Company who remained with the regiment from the time of being mustered in,March 3, 1864 to the time of being mustered out, August 25, 1865.
We are informed by his Captain, (Wm. L. Day) that no man in hos Company performed more faithfully the duties of a good soldier,or responded more promptly to the long roll call!
The greater part of his time he was in service was spent in Tennessee and Georgia, and he was present and participated in the engagements at Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca,Lost Mountain, Pine Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain at the siege of Atlanta, and the battle on 15th and 16th of December, before Nashville. In the winter of 1863, he was sent from Tennessee to Fort Anderson in North Carolina. On the 1st of March was ordered to Newbern, thence to Raleigh, where he arrived with his Company on the 21 day of April, 1865,after passing through a severs battle at or near Wise's Forks. During the summer he was posted at Charlotte, North Carolina, until August 25,when he was ordered to Raleigh and discharged from the service of the United States. He returned home by Indianapolis, and on the 5th day of September, 1865,he received final payment and his discharge.
Young Dice was unconscious from the time the apoplexy attacked and died in less than two hours. a very impressive funeral discourse was delivered at the M. E. Methodist
Church in Laurel at 3 o'clock p.m. April 29th, over his remains by Rev. P. Carland, and a large procession followed his body to the Laurel (Conwell) Cemetery, and witnessed its commission to the grave.
