George Dempsey of North Manheim Boulevard, New Paltz, a professional athlete and a 20-year area resident, died Aug. 3, at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, after a short illness. He was 79. The son of the late Charles and Bridget O'Sullivan Dempsey, he was born on August 11, 1905, in Sydney, Australia. Mr. Dempsey, a professional cyclist, represented Australia in the 1924 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the cycling event. Mr. Dempsey was also a six-day bike rider in the 1920's and 1930's. During the Madison Square Garden games, he was the American Sprint Champion in 1933, and the All-round champion in 1934, scoring more points in the cycling competition than any other American. He was also a life member of the Century Road Club of America. Survivors include his wife, Grace E. Heim Dempsey at home, one son, Richard A. Dempsey of Essex, Conn.; and one daughter, Yvonne Allenson of Gardiner.
