Son of Epaphroditus (Eppy) Lea (1792-1883) and his second wife, Jane D. Eaton (1808-1891), William Graham Lea studied medicine but never practiced the profession. He married Nancy King (Nannie) Cox in 1873 and engaged in farming in Anderson Co., where he served as a justice of the peace. Some time around 1887, the Leas moved to Knoxville, where William became a grocer. He served as deputy sheriff of Knoxville for about six yrs. and captain of the city police force for some 15 yrs. Wm. G. and Nannie had seven children: Robert A.; Joseph Marshall; James D.; John Sevier; Luke Harle; Laura Lunda; and Carrie Jane.
