Raymond F. Garside, age 82, of Wyoming, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at
Crestridge Care Center at Maquoketa following a long, illness. Ray was born on February 6, 1918 in the same Wyoming home that his mother was born in. He was the son of Frank and Edna Bender Garside and received his education in Wyoming where he graduated from high school in 1936. He then attended college in Kalamazoo, Michigan for one year.
As a young man Ray worked,for people who did home painting and home plastering.
In 1939 he married Maxine Gerdes at Wyoming and the couple moved to California. They divorced in 1943. In 1944 Ray enlisted in the United. States Army to fight in WWII. He served as a demolition and mines expert with the second wave, clearing the way for the third wave of soldiers. Ray was discharged in 1946 and returned to Wyoming to begin his carpentry business.
On July 5, 1947 Ray married Sara Lee Lyon at Sydney. The couple lived their married life in Wyoming where Ray was a carpenter for many years. Later he did finish carpentry in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City areas, retiring in 1980. Soon after retiring, Ray began many years of doing small carpenter projects around Wyoming.
Ray was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wyoming. He had been a long time member of the Wyoming Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Legion Wyoming Post #259, and a Wyoming City Council member. He enjoyed pastimes of target practice, hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Lee of Wyoming; one daughter, Sherry (Clay)Dosland of Wyoming; one son, Gary (Sheree) Garside of Iowa City; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one infant son, one sister and one niece.
Funeral services were held at 1 a.m. Friday, October 13, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church in Wyoming. Burial was in the Wyoming Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Skelley officiated. Full military rites were conducted by the American Legion Wyoming Post #259 of Wyoming. Casket bearers were Jim Eichhorn, Terry Rushford, David Buchholtz, Rick Watters, Allen Willman and Kenny Walters. Friends called Thursday, October 12 from 4-7 pm. at the Hayden Funeral Home in Wyoming.
