Barbara Schlessmann was born at Sonderreid, Baden before the formation of present day Germany. She was given the name Anna Barbara Schlessmann by her parents, Johann Michael Schlessmann and Anna Barbara Schauerich. She immigrated to the United States in 1831, departing from Le Havre, France with her husband and young son. She arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 Oct with a second child as she gave birth to a daughter, Mary, during the voyage. By 1837 the family had settled in Beaver County, Pennsylvania and she was going by the name Barbara Camp.
