He was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Bayshore, N.Y., to Peter and Cornelia (Ockers) Seerveld. His childhood through high school was spent in Center Moriches, N.Y., on the eastern end of Long Island. It was a very special place and provided a lifetime of enjoyable memories.
His entire career involved the element of water, first as a merchant seaman and later as a shell fisherman. The remainder of his career he was employed by the Suffolk County Water Authority for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as an officer in the Merchant Marine.
On Sept. 16, 1944, he married Elena "Lynn" Klaassen, of West Sayville, N.Y., where they made their home for many years. He was a lifetime member of the West Sayville Reformed Bible Church for over 60 years where he also served as a deacon. Special interests included spending time with family, reading and all things nautical.
He is survived by Lynn, his wife of 67 years; son Tom (Chanh) Seerveld; daughter Geri (Chuck) Witters; daughter-in-law Kelly Seerveld; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, an older brother and sister, and son Todd Seerveld.
A memorial service is planned for the spring in Vermont, with burial in Orange. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to Gulfside Regional Hospice, 6117 Trouble Creek Road, New Port Richey, FL 34653-5240 (www.GRHospice.org).
The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, is in charge of local arrangements.

ORANGE - Charles L. Seerveld, 91, of Orange, Vermont, and Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away peacefully on Feb. 15, 2012, in Zephyrhills.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. in the Websterville Baptist Church. The committal service with military honors will take place in the Brook Haven Cemetery in Orange.
Following the services, family and friends will gather downstairs at the church for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

ORANGE - The memorial service for Charles L. Seerveld, 91, of Orange, Vt., and Zephyrhills, Fla., was held on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. in the Websterville Baptist Church. He passed away on Feb. 15, 2012, in Zephyrhills.
Pastor David Johnson led the service. Pianist Loeata Tillou led the congregation in the hymns, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," "Now I Belong to Jesus" and "Amazing Grace." Guitarist Bill Croteau sang the song "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me."
A slide presentation, "Remembering Charles in Picture and Song," was played during the service. Reflections were offered by Charles' daughter, Geri Witters; family members Billy Reed and Sing Loc; and friends Dennis LaBonte, Maise Anderson and Matty Shute.
Interment took place in the Brook Haven Cemetery in Orange with Pastor Johnson offering the committal prayers. Military honors were provided by the United States Navy honor guard. Taps was played by CS2 Stephanie Allen. Lt. j.g. James Farnsworth and CS2 Allen folded the flag, which was presented by Lt. j.g. Farnsworth to Charles' widow, Lynn Seerveld.Following the services, family and friends gathered downstairs at the church for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
