Sarah was the first wife of Lysander McCollister "Tan" Teater (1846-1916) who was a Civil War Veteran of the 15th Iowa Infantry. They were married on December 24, 1868 in Appanoose County, Iowa. Sarah was the mother of at least seven children including: Franklin "Frank", Ollie, Eleanor "Nellie", Daisy, Clara Ethel, Theresa and Mary Elese Teater. Sarah was born August 15, 1849 in Lewis County, Virginia (which became West Virginia) to Ruhama Law and her first husband, Andrew Jefferson Law. Sarah died at the age of 33 yrs, 7 months and 14 days. After Sarah's death, her husband married Rhoda Elizabeth (Rouse) Tarr Teater who would become the stepmother of Sarah's children with Lysander.
