"She and her brother Rodney Cleves Boutwell were brought east by William T. Boutwell and wife Hester Crooks Boutwell to be raised by a family of his relatives. The Boutwells were missionaries to the Ojibwe Indians. The other siblings of Lizzie Boutwell were raised on the frontier and many of them became registered members of the Minnesota Ojibwe bands, as mixed bloods (Hester was half Ottawa, which is related to Ojibwe. Hester's father was Ramsay Crooks, who was the chief operating officer of Am Fur Company in second half of 1830s to late 1840s. A very important and powerful man."
