Alvin Leon Daily

Alvin Leon Daily died peacefully June 1, 2012, at his home in Lincoln, NE. He was 93 years old, having been born July 30, 1918, at Milburn, NE, the youngest of Steve and Gertie (Farley) Daily's nine children. He grew up on River Glade farm, by the Middle Loup River, graduating from Milburn High School in 1935. In 1940, suspecting he was not a good fit for the farming life, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Alvin met Shirley McClement, of Dunning, NE when his brother Walter married Shirley's sister Ima. Alvin was 9 years old, Shirley 7; it was not love at first sight, but love did come along. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, San Diego when Pearl Harbor was attacked and was awaiting deployment to the South Pacific. On August 23, 1942, he and Shirley drove to Yuma, AZ and married. Alvin left the Marine Corp in 1947, having served, among many ways, as Communications Chief with the 5th Marine Division in their landing at Iwo Jima, where he was injured by shrapnel February 20, 1945. Alvin and Shirley returned to make their home at Anselmo, NE. In 1949 Alvin would begin both a long career as Postmaster at Anselmo and also with the National Guard unit in Broken Bow, where he would advance to the rank of Major. In 1981 he retired as Postmaster, then he and Shirley began traveling around the country and beyond, visiting family and sightseeing. They moved their home to Lincoln NE, in 1992 and Shirley died in October 1994. They had been married 52 years. Alvin was a life time member of the Methodist Church and he was an active and sociable member of many organizations over the years: VFW, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Temple, Elk and Moose. Dancing was his favorite pastime since his childhood and bowling became another favorite pastime in his later years.
Alvin is survived by four daughters: Shannon (Charles) Westrup, of Crocker, Missouri; Patricia Horn of Springdale, Arkansas; Jane (John) Mailand; Erin (Al) Krause of Lincoln, NE; eleven grandchildren & twelve great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday (6-6-12) at Roper and Sons Funeral Home 4300 O Street, Lincoln NE, Reverend Keith Johnson presiding.
Burial will be at McPherson National Cemetery on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. (6-7-12).
