Deceased Name: PROVINCETOWN - Matthew James Costa
77, a resident Of Provincetown, died Thursday after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease.

He was the husband Of Sherry (Santos) Costa.

A lifelong resident Of Provincetown, Mr. Costa joined the Army at the age Of 17 And served with the 398th Infantry Regiment, anti-tank company, In Europe during World War II.

After his discharge he returned to Provincetown where he became a skilled carpenter And licensed plumber. Mr. Costa built the Meadows Motel, Provincetown Seafood Market And Dairyland, where he was known to have lunch, argue over politics And tell stories from days gone by. He enjoyed treasure hunting but was more passionate about fishing And hunting even after he lost his right eye In 1947 as a result Of a rifle accident. He was a past president Of the Highland Fish And Game Club.

Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Kathleen "Cookie" Corona-Girvetz Of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; two sons, William Costa Of North Truro And James Costa Of Eastham; three stepchildren, Valerie Johnson Of Provincetown, Sheila Ramalho Of South Dennis And Chris Branch Of Provincetown; his stepmother, Ofella Costa Of Provincetown; two brothers, Elmer Costa Of Orleans And Gerald Costa Of Truro; four sisters, Florence Menangas Of Provincetown, Lucretia Rose Of Bossier City, La., Theodora "Doris" Shaffer Of Buzzards Bay And Mary Guerreiro Of New Bedford; 11 grandchildren; And numerous nieces And nephews.

A funeral with full military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with a Mass Of Christian burial at St. Peter's Church In Provincetown.

Burial will follow In St. Peter's Cemetery.
