Civil War Union Army Soldier.

He served during the Civil war as a Sergeant in Company D, 3rd Delaware Infantry, being mustered in on January 25, 1862.

He was wounded in the hip on June 2, 1864 during the Battle of Cold Harbor, and was eventually transferred to the 24th Veterans Reserve Corps. He was mustered out as Sergeant Major of the regiment on July 27, 1865.

He was present in Ford's Theater in Washington, DC when John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. He was part of a hastily put together guard that was placed to protect the residence of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton after the assassination became known.

After the war he was employed for 29 years by the Philadelphia County Prison, rising from Clerk to Deputy Superintendent.
