Mr. Ira R. Abernathy Sr., age 86 of Jasper (Bent Tree) passed early Sunday morning, August 19, 2001 at his residence. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Stella Abernathy, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Ira R. and Jean Abernathy, Alpharetta; John R. and Dennise Abernathy, Washington, D.C.; Dr. George T. Abernathy, Florida; Ira G. and Pam Burge, Jackson, GA; and Terry R. and Terry Stevens, Douglasville; daughters, Carol A. and Don Bailey, Ball Ground; Gladys Helfinstine, Oklahoma; sisters, Colleen Thomason, Roswell; and Evelyn Anderson, Crawfordville; 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren. Services will be held Tuesday, August 21, at 2 p.m. from New Lebanon Presbyterian Church with remains placed in state at 1 p.m. Rev.'s C.W. Cox and Bob Pooley officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Roswell. Mr. Abernathy had been the President of the Fulton Supply Company in Atlanta. The family will receive friends Monday evening at the funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m. Cagle Funeral Home, Jasper in charge of the arrangements.
